taiwan culture homework

1.Saisiyat people choose their surnames from plants, animals and natural phenomena. In your country, do you think a person's surname has special meaning which can reflect your own culture and why?
-In Taiwan most of the people's last name are from China, because their ancestors are from China. And i think our last names were also symbolizes something but in pictures, it's just that through out time the pictures had come to modern Chinese words.

2.Lily is a symbol of RuKai. For Paiwan, a hundred-step viper is significant in their society. In your country, do you have any symbol that represents your country and what does that mean?
-Plum blossom is a symbol of Taiwan, plum blossoms only opens during autumns, and that means Taiwan will always be succeed because plum blossoms can even survive through autumns which the other flowers can't.

3.On Beian's traditional weddings, you can see a prospective bride climbing a giant swing. And tribesmen swing her until the swing sails like kites. In your country, do you have any special ceremonies that are held on weddings? Please explain it.
-Now days the weddings in Taiwan are mostly westernized, other then western weddings there are still traditional Chinese weddings, but those kind of weddings don't really happen around anymore. What's special about traditional Chinese weddings are that the process is more complicated, and the bride and the bridegroom wears red, means lucky.

why were the European the one to conquer most of our planet?

The biggest reason why European had so much power is because of their Geographic luck. Geographic luck means European were lucky to exist in the land of Europe. Because Europe had such great raw resources and the position on the planet, where It’s close to the eastern part of globe but also the western, that’s why they know so many information around the world. European’s geographic luck can be separate into 3 smaller parts, and they are steel, animals and Guns.

Steel was one of the reason How European had so much power, Steel provides a lot of things relates to technology, such as vehicles, buildings, guns, and other weapons/ technological crafts. That made other countries couldn’t invade Europe easily, because Europe had so much technological technologies from steel that the enemies couldn’t break through. Steel also can make into infantry weapons/ tools, such as swords, guns, horse shoes, and armors. That made European good at both defense and offense, which is a really big advantage for conquering other nations and countries.

Steel can also be make into guns. Guns were the most advanced weapon during that age, and european were the only ones had that technology, because they did a lot of sailing to explore the world, and eventually explored gun powder from China. And when the Europeans are fighting with their guns, especially with the countries that have low technology, they will think Europeans are god because they never seen anything like guns before. Therefore it will probably lead to that they giving up because most of the poor/low technology country’s people are superstitious, and they will probably pass this information to other nearby country to just surrender when Europeans come. Also during that age, not even one kind of weapon could defend the power of guns, because the weapons are only swords and shields.

The third advantage for European be the world power is because of their germ. When they travel to another country to have war, the germs and virus from Europe will spread through that country, but the European doesn’t get effected because they’re already used to it, and grew an immune system generations ago. So Germs are just like poisons, to make your opponent weaker during the war. And plus European don’t really get infected by other country’s germs, because European were almost always the first one to attack, and they also have high technology to produce cures from other country’s germs.

The three facts guns, germs and steel are the major reasons discovered by Dr. Jared Diamond of how European had such great power around the world. The European had these three advantages were because they are geographically lucky, because Europe was the perfect place for trading and sailing. And they’re also located between the eat and west globe made there the best spot for exploring western and eastern culture.

Humanities: Parrot saved a 2 years old girl's life

The link to the news:

What is the article about?
-Megan, a baby sitter in State Colorado. Megan was showering, the 2 years old girl choked by eating a cookie in the livingroom, as soon as the parrot in the house saw the girl fell on the floor, and face started to turn purple, the parrot started to flap his wings and yelled: "MOM, BABY" Megan heard the call and ran to the baby and saved her on time.

What is its significance?
-To let people around the world know this strange event happened in Colorado, and also to let people know some facts that they didn't know about parrots.

Can you detect any bias?
-There are hardly any bias. It can be that the people didn't award the parrot for saving that girl's life.

taiwan social study: different country's food culture

1.Compare food cultures between Taiwan and one Western country. Answer the following questions.
-Scotland food culture and Taiwanese food culture.

(1)What affects each food culture?
-Scotch people started to use wheat, bread and potato as a huge part of their food culture by the 1800s. One of the most common dish in Scotland is broth/ stews.
The climate in Scotland is really cold and wet, so their food’s taste are mostly to keep you warm, also whiskies.

(2)What are similarities or differences between two food cultures in terms of characteristics of cuisine, cooking techniques, the art and etiquette of dinning and local snacks?
-Scotland potato soups and stews’ cooking techniques are similar with Taiwanese’s soups, because they both needs to boil in a pot. Since Scotland is so close to england, i think they also have a typical english table manner.

(3)What is your reflection?
-I think i will be really interested in Scotch food because now it’s a bit cold in taiwan, so a warm meal would be a ideal choice during this kind of weather. And through out my research it makes me feel that western countries cares more about the taste of the food then the manner, except for Great Britain. And eastern countries especially China and Taiwan’s traditional food’s tastes aren’t as strong as western countries.

and here is a really good website of local foods in Scotland:

making energy bar

Today is the first time our group try to make an energy bar. We planned to mix oat, raisins, dried banana pieces, and nuts together and then use malt sugar to fix it into a bar shape. So we first poured right amount of oat, raisins, dried bananas and nuts into a bowl and mix it together, then we started to cook malt sugar in a pot. Because the malt sugar was too sticky to make it spread in to bowl. But it turns out the malt sugar started to scorch and stick on the pot, so we changed our mind and added some water in there, wanting it to be a sugar water instead of liquid malt sugar. And then we poured the malt sugar water into the bowl, the mixture of oat absorbed all the sugar water and turned into a half-oat meal state. So we pressed the mixture with sugar water into a bar shape, and we were finished.

We learned that next time we shouldn't boil the malt sugar in water, instead we will put the malt sugar in a bowl and boil the bowl of malt sugar in a pot of water. That will make the malt sugar become liquid instead of sticking onto the pot. We will also add more malt sugar then last time, because it didn't taste so sweet.

China's food safety crisis deteriorates

China pulled eggs off shelves and stopped exporting the eggs, because it was detected to have the chemical-melamine in it. The China food toxin was far more widespread then we knew.

This article is really important because it warns people to be careful with the eggs they sell in market, so it will decrease the possibilities of people dies from the toxin.

There are no bias in this article.

living and none living

A living thing must be made out of protein, and it must have a circulating system that contains movable element, for example for human they have veins for their circulating system, and blood for carrying nutrient to support the body and carrying out waste from your body. But carrying out waste isn't necessary, because spiders doesn't poop. But for sure all the living organisms must have a system that intakes nutrients from outside, because it's impossible to have something that never needs nutrient from outside and can be able to move by it self.

Living organisms should also have defense system and reproductive system. Because for example on earth all the organisms are aggressive, because to be able to live you have to kill your enemy. And also you have to reproduce to balance the amount of your species's death.

But I'm not sure about that point, I know this is the way how it works on earth, but for the ET example ET came to planet earth which he thinks we are aliens. Maybe there's a planet the organisms over there doesn't reproduce and fight, maybe they're all not aggressive so there will be no injuries or deaths, so it will decrease a lot of the reason to reproduce. Or maybe the planet is located in the very edge of the universe where there are really really really really tiny chance of getting hit by a meteorite and distinguish all the organisms. But having all living organisms should have ability to reproduce still stands a very high chance. Because all the living organisms should die eventually, unless they take the energy of a planet as refresh their organs and skin every time it got bad, but still nothing is infinity. But probably some kind of organism lives for thousands of years because there are no heat, acid, radiation and everything which are destructible on the planet. But who knows, so i think based on human's knowledge we still can't make rules about living organisms, unless earth is where all the living organisms are in the entire universe.

community service

My name is David Sun, and i go to shin-lu foundation for my community service. There are lots of kids who have mental problem there, their looks might be a little different too.
The teachers over there tells us to take care of a kid, and walk them through some kind of agility training maze thing, to train their reflexes, you have to be very careful not to let their head hit on the bars and everything. And for me it's not that tired to take care of the kids there, because its really fun to watch them going through those maze because each of them have their unique way of going through it. some kids gets to lye on a wheeled-pillow like thing and slide through the maze, because they have problem with their legs. Any ways it's also a very special opportunity to have this kind of experience, and i had lots of fun on my first day.

string theory

i think the movie explained it in a too big picture, makes it confusing. It says the whole universe is made of a stretched string, its hard to understand because from what people know already the universe is a 3d space, but how do you apply universe is piece of string to that?

how does (The Giver) end?

i read a book called The Giver. This book is about a kid called Jonas, he lived in a small community, it’s a weird community that the people in it never seen the outside world before, they don’t have feelings, they can only see black and white, they all get same thing for everything. They’re mostly like clones. But once jonas got the most important job in the community called (the receiver) which he gets the outside world knowledge passed down to him from the giver, them two were the only one who have real emotions and real world knowledge in the community since the beginning they got this job. Jonas found the life is boring to stay in this community, and he want to help these people in the community know the real world knowledge, he also wanted them to enjoy the fun of real world. So he decided to escape and search for a real world community.

As Jonas escaped, he brought Gabriel, one of his family unit with him that he discovered he could transfer his knowledge to him. They been through really tough real world weather as they escaped, in the end they were very very weak, and they saw a sled and slide down the hill, they heard people celebrating christmas and warm light and loving each other, then the story ended.

I think they died. Because if there really were a village down the hill, then i think they would have discover it/hear people’s voice earlier before they even sat on the sled, but they didn’t. So i think they saw those things happening because they started to pass out, and visualized their dream happened.

engagement grades

community contributor: 1
From the start of taking physics class till know, i didn't really paired up with lots of groups, i mostly work with the teacher or a small group, even though it's like that i never been a captain of a small group either, because i barely knew any basic physics equations. So i didn't really helped much for a group.

critical thinker: 1.3
If i met a question that i don't understand, i will try to solve it and look at all the formulas i can use in my notebook, and I'm never 100% sure which one is right to use, most of the time i give up and sitting there spinning my chair, waiting for the teacher to come and ask me what's wrong, but i knew it's hard to let him do that because he's too busy answering other people's questions. But now i know that's the wrong thing to do and from now i will try to raise my hand every time when i don't get something.

active learner: 1
For most of the time, when i don't get a question for my homework, i don't ask my parents because i knew they would stuff in a bunch of knowledge into my head based on a single simple question, what i expected was only the answer i want, so i always planned to ask my classmates tomorrow. But now i know my parents stuff in a bunch of ways and reasons of how to solve this problem is because they love me, they want me to go to a good school and have lots of knowledge it's the reason they born me to provide this world more ideas and knowledge.

person of high character: 1.8
I've been always following the rules in class and i don't yell just because i don't get a question.

effective communicator: 1.4
There was this time i paired up with one guy in a project, our group only had two people, i gave him some suggestions of how to solve this problem, and he said it's pretty interesting and tried it and it worked.

final grade: 6.5/10

science physics

this year we're studying physics, and we're working on kinematics, velocity, and acceleration problems. before this we worked on drawing graphs on our laptops with the motion detector
